There are apps related to facts about women in computing, women in computing conferences, coding for young people and some clubs, but there were are no local programs in the many rural areas such as the Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan.
We created an app and accompanying website that will hopefully fill this gap for girls who are interested in computer science and hopefully provide them with information and resources to help them learn about the technology careers and educational opportunities.
This will hopefully open the conversation about careers for women in computing sciences and help girls connect with professors and other professionals in computer science careers. With over 50% of STEM jobs in computer science, it's important for girls to know the opportunities that are available to them if they choose to study computer science.
The Website was edited by LSSU Students Sierra Jaqua, Seth Westphal & Mohamed Doumbouya
Sierra Jaqua is a junior at LSSU working on her BS in Computer Networking with a Concentration in Web Development in hopes of graduating in April of 2019.
Seth Westphal is also a junior at LSSU. He is hoping to obtain a BS in Computer Science and is looking forward to graduate in the spring of 2019
Mohamed Doumbouya is also a junior working on his BS in Computer Science. He hopes to find a job in the Software Engineering/Software development industry. He looks forward to graduating in spring of 2019.
The app was created as a Senior Project at LSSU by Liz Dotski & Cordell Holbrook
Elizabeth Dotski is a college student who is working towards getting her BS in Computer Science and her BS in Mathematics in hopes of graduating in December of 2017 from Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie. From there she hopes to find a job locally and use her skills in both math and computer science.
In high school, Elizabeth had participated in the National Honors Society, she was in Band from 6th grade to graduation; where she held first chair in her instrument section on many occasions. Elizabeth was also a constant name on the honor roll. Through out high school her plan was to become a veterinarian. She took biology classes in high school and took allied health to get her feet in the door of the health field. She had even applied to Lake Superior State University and other schools to get into their biology programs. It wasn’t until she started school at Lake Superior State University where she realized she did not like science at all. So she thought real hard what she loved to do and that was Math. So she changed her field of study and went to math. Math requires to take a few computer classes where she realized she really loved computers as well. So her and her advisor worked together to come up with a dream plan where she would get both her BS in Mathematics and her BS in Computer Science
My name is Cordell Holbrook, I am currently 22 years old and was born in Woodbury, New Jersey. I am very interested in anything that has to do with technology. I enjoyed creating this app because I feel that it would be a good thing to get more women in computer related degrees. This is because when doing something we all have different opinions and perspectives on them so this would give more of a diversity when working together.
